A night at the museum

David Bowie Is

Thanks to  @MasterCardUK I went to see the highly anticipated David Bowie exhibition at the V&A
recently.

As soon as we walked up the steps at the V&A we were immersed in all things Bowie. A costume booth, music and themed food & drinks all helped contribute to a buzzing atmosphere.

The combination of Bowie's private collection, the beautiful V&A at night and the inspiring curation squashed any myths that it might be 'over hyped'.

As soon as we entered the exhibition everything else was just minor detail. The 'David Bowie Is' exhibition had me in the palm of it's hands and I was immersed in the interactive spectacular. The V&A has been given unprecedented access to David Bowie's archive to curate the first international retrospective of his fascinating career. It features more than 300 objects including: handwritten lyrics, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, set designs and instruments.

I don't exactly own every Bowie album and this exhibition isn't only for fans. This is an exhibition for anyone who has an interest in the pop art movement, music or film.

My personal highlights included the Andy Warhol pieces included in the exhibition and also a personal letter from Jim Henson to Bowie from  during the filming of Labyrinth.

I don't want to spoil too much for you but I do recommend going along to see it for yourself. The exhibition is open until August 2013

Everyone loves Gif's

With the recent revelation that Gif is actually pronounced Jif I'd like to share my favourite source. http://londongrumblr.co.uk/ is one of my favourite blogs and always guarantees to make me laugh,

It quite simply uses the magic of GIf's to dramatise the typical woe's of Londoners.

It's the perfect remedy if you, like me, need some cheering up on a Monday morning.

Monday. We meet again

Square one

I'm currently at home googling 'shakespeare for 7 years olds'. It's not how I imagined spending my evening when I woke up this morning but this is completely normal for a 'square'. This is one of many reasons why Squared is keeping me on my toes and i'm loving it.

For those of you who don't know Squared, it's a ground-breaking education initiative, led by Google to empower the leaders of the future to make the most of the opportunities offered by emerging technologies.

Empowering today's and tomorrow's leaders to drive the industry [r]evolution

Is it too early to get excited? Definitely not. Within the first two days we have packed in so many different things that I can only imagine what it will be like looking back after 6 weeks. I've started a diary again as I'm so eager to keep up with all of the incredible information we are receiving through inspirational talks, team work and projects. I'm also already spotting things that I know will really help make a difference when I go back to my job in 6 weeks.

It's already difficult to pick highlights but here is a snapshot of the people who have visited us so far:

Inspirational talk from Amanda MazKenzie, CMO at Aviva
As a fellow marketeer working in the Insurance industry I was delighted that I would get to meet Amanda. Being the first woman in a 300 year old company on the board isn't the only impressive thing about her, the list really does go on. Within seconds many of us were franticly trying to take note of the inspiring and refreshingly honest insights Amanda shared.

She spoke quite a bit about being brave enough to 'pipe up' and always ask why. What is the preverbal big picture? The cost of silence is massive and it's much better to get the idea in the room rather than let an opportunity pass you. This is most definitely something I need to put into action more often.

Amanda is a real champion of understanding peoples behavior. This has been a big focus for us all as a group this week and I'm very quickly understanding the true importance.

"Be aware of what gives you energy and go back to those moments"

Anthropological view on digital from Neil Perkins, Founder of Only Dead Fish

Earlier today Neil joined us for a fantastic talk all about our favorite subject, digital. It was a jam packed session that focused on:

- Importance of a content strategy for brands (paid, earned & owned)
- How digital has influenced business models
- Importance of destination vs distribution thinking
- The vertical stack
- Value of facilitation
- Agile working practices

Working client side I thought the video he shared from John Jay offered a really interesting perspective on the role of agency partners. It's so important for agencies to help brands understand the sole of their brand and how to make it relevant for customers.

Neil's presentation has inspired the idea for my next blog about bottom up success stories on social media coming later this week.

Now back to my preparation for tomorrow's very exciting task with the Shakespeares Schools Federation.

What's a Grainne?

It's me! A day in the life of me includes voicemails for 'Granny'. Emails thanking 'Groin' and packages for Grianne. Don't even get me started on Starbucks..

I moved from Dublin to London 2 years ago to work for the one of the most iconic & British brands in the UK, Churchill Insurance. Oh Yes! It was an absolute dream come true to work on the brand team and do what sometimes felt like being Churchill's agent. Since then I moved 6ft across the floor to join the Direct Line Marketing team to manage social media. Moving to London was the best choice I have ever made and I'm one of those annoying people that loves their job.

When i'm not immersed in 'oh yes' puns and talking on a giant red telephone I like to think I live my life according to Stylist magazine. However, in reality it's much less glamorous. I have a wonderful and bonkers group of friends that keep me busy with all sorts of random adventures.

I'm about to jump head first in to one of my busiest Summers ever. I'm beginning Google Squared, moving south of the river (oooh controversial) and going on holiday to Canada. I've never been busier and couldn't be happier.

I spend far too much time online and I'm delighted I've another excuse now that I've created my own blog. Here I will be updating as often as I have something interesting to share. From what i've heard about Google Squared so far ... expect to hear from me quite regularly.
